Buy a Max Woody chair in the Appalachian Mountains
Max Woody was a sixth generation chair maker and a tribute to North Carolina’s rich furniture-making heritage. Born and raised in McDowell County, Max also inherited a love for the music of his home, the Appalachian Mountains, and found a way to share both of these arts with visitors. In his shop, Max produced custom-made chairs — and though he never ran a paid advertisement, he had a waiting list that stretched for years. Until his passing in January 2019, he welcomed visitors to come in and hear a story or two, even if they couldn’t wait that long to purchase a chair. His chairs were handmade in styles and designs that have been passed down through his family. Friday evenings, Max could often be found working on a different piece of wood as a part-time fiddler.
